You were not meant to spend life treading water in the Sea of Debt. Sure, most of us walk in the water’s edge at different times in our lives … and sometimes for a good reason.

But once your toes get wet, it’s so easy to wade deeper into the surf. Your child is born and you owe the hospital and doctors more than your insurance pays. You purchased a home with an adjustable rate mortgage and the rate surged up. We all wade knee deep through these waves that tug at us along the shore.

Then it happens.

You hear the siren sounds of low interest rate credit cards. The 125%, variable rate home equity loan sounded like a good thing at the time. The furniture store’s “no money down, no payments until next year” called out to you. Gas prices rise and it’s difficult to fill your new SUV.

The Sea of Debt gets little respect until we’re in it up to our chins and scared of going under. First, the rip tides of rising interest rates tug you away from shore and into the deep. You struggle to keep your head up. Sharks dart around you in the surf. And then you lose your footing. It might be an unexpected home repair, a lost job, or a medical emergency, but that one bad wave knocks you under.

Now you lie awake fretting, unable to sleep because you’ve borrowed from one credit card to pay another and now they both want their money. Life is not supposed to be this way!
